What’s in your milk?
April 13, 2008 3:23 pm

cows
So apparently the milk i have been drinking in the last decade or so is laced with something called rBGH(recombinant bovine growth hormone). rBGH is a hormone injected into dairy cows to induce milk production. Studies in Canada and Europe have led to its rejection due to health concerns. Supposedly dairy cows treated with this hormone were found to have mastitis (udder infections), reproductive problems and even lameness. To combat these side effects, farmers treat the cows with antibiotics and the residue ends up in my milk resulting in growth of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

That’s not even the worst of it - a recent study has found that the level of a hormone called “insulin-like growth factor-1″ (IFG-1) in milk is higher when a dairy cow is treated with rBGH. This hormone has been linked to the growth of breast, colon and prostrate cancer. Check out this Vermont report.

Monsanto, the makers of rBGH and their lobbyist have aggressively tried to suppress the health risks associated with this hormone. Two investigative journalists were fired back 2001 while doing a story on rBGH use in Florida dairies. Supposedly their station delayed the airing of their story, demanding they make modifications to it after Monsanto threatened legal action on the station.

More Videos on Monsanto and genetic engineering.

Since the FDA is so very lax at protecting my milk loving-self from these dangerous genetically modified chemicals - what to do?

1. Buy milk that is rBGH-free, rBST-free and sourced from grass-fed cows. I found a really good report rating dairy.

2. Buy shares in a local CSA (community supported agriculture) . This just means you pay a seasonal fee to get local produce from the CSA which would essentially be a local farm. You would then be able to get raw milk straight from a cow on the farm. Please note that raw milk sale is only legal in 28 states so you need to figure out if your state is legal. In some states you might be able to ‘cow share’ - pay boarding fee to the farmer looking after your dairy cow while you reap the benefits of its milk. Check out the benefits of raw milk.

I have been anti milk for sometime but after seeing the state of milk here in the states. Where as milk elsewhere turns into sour milk or even cheese after sitting for a while, American milk due to all the hormones in it turns to a suspension instead.
I did read about that story being killed, so sad that hundreds of millions in the States will continue putting their well being at risk by drinking that poison.

[…] a little bit of shocking research on what is in my store bought milk, it is time to go back to my roots and eat as i did on the farm or at least as closely to it as […]

Watch two movies if you want to be scared in terms of the production of food in States:
    a) The Corporation
    b) Diet for a New America
Also, any time I have ever heard the name “Monsanto”-it’s never been anything good- whether it’s Vandana Shiva (look her up, brilliant lady) talking about their terminator seeds or documentaries talking about how they crushed stories about their milk production practices…..Monsanto is clearly not a company to mess with.
