HIV/AIDS
August 1, 2008 5:53 am

This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart, I have 2 cousins who are HIV+, one of whom nearly lost his life to complications related it. So imagine my suprise when I read about child prostitution on the rise in Eldoret.

Girls as young as 12 yrs old?
adult males?
and as if that is not bad enough, no protection?

The town mayor has ordered a crack down on prostitution - perhaps he might want to start by arresting all the ‘Johns’ involved - what kind of nut job has sex with a 12 yr old? Since we live in a patriarchal society, I have a hunch that a crack down means arresting the girls and at the most letting the men off with a warning and who knows what happens to the girls when they land in a jail cell with no money to bail themselves out?

I wish the article had more information on how the situation could be alleviated. Anyone know if there are local organizations working to change these girls lives? Or anyone have any kind of information pertaining to this Eldoret situation - please share.

I leave you with a video of congolese musician, Fally Ipupa’s song “La Sida est la” (AIDS is here) which talks about the dangers of HIV and what we should do to protect ourselves.

Fighting HIV/AIDS requires comprehesive programmes and arresting the girls will not help the sitution but empowering them with meaningfull skills and educatiing them on the risk a head is the only way to go

CNN refuses to publish my blog about its seemingly racist article on this topic. Its picture of an integrated couple on a Mombasa, Kenya beach states, “A couple walks on a beach in Mombasa, Kenya, where sex-tourism involving minors is rampant.” That caption may imply that that man is with that woman for sex. That smacks of racism. I’m white and my wife is black Kenyan. If a photo of us were taken on a Mombasa beach or elsewhere, would CNN infer that my wife is a prostitute? At least CNN should have the decency to put a denial in, rather than ignoring my blog. Or, perhaps CNN is indecent????

Wow, kids are young as 12???

AIDS is one war that we’ll take ages to win. But we shall win. One person at a time.

Oh Buddy, Kenya world health organizations have to come forward to stop AIDS in this world. Mostly in Africa AIDS spread very fast due to the low knowledge about sex. The WORLD has to come forward to save those people…Come guys, join hands to save the world.

It’s a pity to know that we are living in 21sth century, but our societies are no better den stone ages, people at that time used to have this same sense of inequality between different genders of societies and even now Women are facing the same challenges when it comes to attain a respect within a society, Sending prostitutes to prison wont just solve the problem of spreading HIV it will worsen the overall situation, the main cause of AIDS in third world countries is due to peoples financial conditions and of course due to a lower literacy rate.
